Our work environment and surroundings affect our overall productivity. It is the reason why remote or home-based employees settle themselves in a coffee shop from time to time. Aside from coffee shops, some work from home employees find a co-working space to hole up into - and that’s all because they need a change in environment to inspire them to work better and faster.

Work from home employees however are free to roam around and find a spot that suits them well when they try to work. What about employees who are required to stay in the office during work hours? The trick there is to design the office in such a way that can inspire creativity and increase productivity for every employee - and below are some of these office design ideas:

  1. Add in more natural light.

Adequate lighting helps keep employees focused. In the office, try to let in more natural light by uncovering or opening the windows. Through this, you don’t just get to conserve electric energy, but employees will be more inspired to work because of the outside view.

With enough lighting at work, employees will experience less headache, eyestrain and fatigue. It also helps improve an employee’s mood and emotional stability.

  1. Allot a space for relaxation.

In the office, you must designate a space that is purely for rest and relaxation. This area should be used by employees who need to take a break from the pressure and stress from their workload. In these areas, it is important to provide a comfortable couch, entertainment options such as a television or a sound system that delivers soothing music.

Employees need this area of relaxation to avoid them from experiencing a burn-out which can decrease their overall productivity and creativity. Relaxation allows employees to recharge and think through new ideas, projects and the like.

  1. Designate a “quiet” workspace.

Different folks, different strokes. While some people can work well in a group setting, some prefer to work alone. Because of this, it is also a good idea to add a “quiet-only” workspace in the office. Some employees can choose to work here if they cannot concentrate on their craft in the common working areas because of extra chatter, noise, and other types of distractions.

  1. Minimize office clutter.

Clutter can be a source of distraction, especially if you have employees who are a bit OC (Obsessive-Compulsive). A well-organized workspace can help employees be at ease, relaxed and focused on what they do. Hence, it results to an increased rate of productivity.

To avoid office clutter, make sure you have a filing cabinet to store all those documents and papers that could be just lying around your desks. You also need to allot a space where all office tools such as pens, clips, scissors, staplers and the like can be stored and organized after each use. This helps clear up every employee’s desk after each workday. Don’t also forget about those extra and jumbled wires - you also need to de-clutter these as it is not just a source of distraction, but it could also cause accidents too.

  1. Put up a “progress” board.

Having a progress board in a common area in the office helps every employee track down where they are in a certain project. It could also be a source of motivation since it can be decorated with personal notes, motivational quotes, and messages of “kudos” for every task and project that is completed in a given period of time. Basically, a progress board does not just help in organizing projects and making task-tracking effective, it could also be a source of encouragement and motivation for employees who need a little boost.

Most of these office design ideas do not really entail actual construction work - it only needs a little rearrangement and some creativity to boost productivity in the office. Of course, you may need some new furniture if you decide to improve the office’s relaxation and solo workspace areas.
