5 Tips for Choosing the Best Job

There are a lot of factors to consider when searching for a job. Depending on your specialty, you could be faced with too many decisions regarding where to go. Alternatively, your choices might be extremely limited.

However, there are a few crucial things you should consider before accepting-- or even applying to-- a job. Here are five tips for choosing the best job for you.

Have Clearly Defined Goals

Before you do anything else, you must know what path you want to follow and where you want to end up. Set some SMART goals to outline where you want the next year, five years, and ten years to take you. This will help guide your decision making as you enter the job search process.

SMART goals are meant to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. They encourage you to not only set a destination but to plan the journey as well. It will also help you determine if you need to upgrade or develop any skills before aiming higher for more prestigious positions.

Define Your Perfect Job

Take some time to sit down and hash out what your ideal job would be like. What are some of the things that would make it so wonderful? What experiences do you imagine having there? Once you know these things, you can sort through which open positions are relatively close to that ideal picture you’ve created.

One caveat when doing this: sometimes your ideals are just that, ideals. It is important to remain realistic when working through this exercise. Of course, you can write down the unrealistic ideals and decide during the search to lower your expectations if an opening jumps out at you.

Location, Location, Location

For an effective job search, you should consider broadening your horizons outside of your current location. Evaluate the areas in which you are considering taking a position and see if they align with your needs.

Make sure to go through some job sites and work with filters or reach out to local recruiting agencies to find a company that would be your perfect fit.

For example, you may find a procurement job that would be perfect to expand your knowledge and improve your career in a city that you would hate to live in for one reason or another. What will you have to sacrifice and what can you gain by applying to certain locations?

But, if you are in a more narrow field, like being a neurologist, you may need to find specialized sites to help you searching for open positions in neurology field of your dreams.

Work with a Recruiter

If the prospect of searching for the right job seems too overwhelming, contact a recruiter. A recruiter can help you find the right job to fit your needs while taking into consideration your location requirements, salary, and goals. Also, recruiters often have contact with one another. So, by having a recruiter who has a network of other recruiters looking to fill positions, you get a foot in the door where you may not otherwise be considered.

Know Your Worth

Before you start applying for jobs, it is important to know your worth. In doing so, you won’t be as likely to settle for less based on a lack of confidence or awareness of your strengths. Identify a salary range that you believe your skills deserve and apply that filter to your job search efforts.

Sometimes it is better to settle for less if you are passionate about the position and know that the experience will bring you higher value than a substantial paycheck would. This also applies if you desperately wish to be in a certain area, perhaps in a small town near your aging parents, in which case the opportunity cost outweighs the financial implications.

The job search process can be a challenge regardless of what industry you work in. Remember to apply critical thinking and keep your mind open to new opportunities
